Would you like to contribute to the growth of OSS in India?

Though we have started with some development and training activities, the objective of OSSRC is to be a facilitator for those interested in open source area (as users, as contributors, as programmers, etc) to come together and help address challenging problems in the society. Our activities have been mostly to set the base for this to happen. Now, we are in a position to open up areas so that we can all work together.

NOTE : All material you contribute as part of this effort will be completely open to everyone else via this portal, and you will be acknowledged in suitable ways. OSSRC/IBM/CDAC/IIT will not have any exclusive rights on these.

Areas for work

I. Localisation of Moodle

Moodle is a fairly simple, but quite powerful learning management system available fully in the open source. We have made a Hindi version of this system, which you can download from resources section. We would like your help in making versions for other languages. The task involves translating the glossary , and then using the translated glossary as the basis, translating all the .php files . If you are interested, send in a mail to us and we will get back to you with further guidelines/ instructions. Good familiarity with the target language is a must.

Current Status

... information on groups working on this will be listed here...

II. Localisation of Drupal

Drupal is a very popular Open Source Content Management System written in PHP. Currently work is going on translating drupal in Hindi. Mr. Neelkant Ghumare has contributed Marathi translation of Drupal. The .po files are avilable here in the resources section.

Current Status
Marathi = 27.5% except administration menu ( Drupal version 4.7.3 )
Hindi = 30% Complete ( Drupal version 4.7.3 )

II. Local language electronic content for school curricula

We would like a variety of content aimed at school students, covering topics of interest in their curriculum. It need not follow any specific syllabus (though material confirming to specific syllabus is also valuable from an examination perspective). Such content can be in various forms:
  • Well written short tutorials on specific concepts
  • Stories around specific concepts
  • Videos which can act as nice supplementary material
  • animations
  • simulations
  • annotated worked examples
All the material must be free of external copyright.

III. Help in teaching open source related topics

We often get requests to conduct training programs for various groups of people, often school teachers, on specific OSS tools (say, Moodle, Drupal, etc). If you are good in any OSS softwares, and comfortable in teaching, and can spare sometime once in a while for such activities, let us know.
