CDAC Mumbai, Kharghar centre, announces a series of lecture demos to introduce you to the wide range of high quality softwares available in open source. Being open source they are available with the full source code and the freedom for you to copy, distribute, study, adapt and extend as you feel like. Usually these are also available free of charge. These lecture­demos will be held on the third saturday of every month at the Kharghar campus of CDAC (address below), and will be from 10 to 12.30. We will cover 2­4 softwares at a time.

The softwares being planned in the list include

  • office productivity tools like office suite, e-mail clients, latex, project management, etc
  • multimedia tools like players, CD/DVD writers, audio/video/image editing tools, 3­D image manipulation
  • learning management, content management, knowledge management, library management, document management, etc
  • artificial intelligence tools in areas such as natural language processing, machine learning, neural network, etc
  • visualisation and plotting tools
  • tools for localisation and accessibility
  • application softwares such as hospital management and e­commerce.
  • Tools for software development – IDEs, performance evaluation, etc
Participants can pick up a copy of the softwares in the demo­list from the venue (please bring a pen­drive).

Target audience:The seminars will be of interest to small/medium scale companies, faculty members (particularly those pursuing any research), and students of different disciplines.

Registration:
Registration is necessary for participation. Seats are limited – a max of 100 per session. Registration fee: Rs 200/­ per session, payable directly at CDAC office or on site. In order to register, please apply giving your name, institution, contact address (incl e­mail and phone), etc and a local cheque/DD for the fee, and send to the address below.

Helping Flood Relief Operations in Bihar

A 2 member team from OSSRC at CDAC mumbai went to Patna for 2 weeks (11-24 September 2008) in order to support a humanitarian effort, to help flood relief in Bihar. This particular effort, which was being led by IBM India, required them to use some specialised Software(s) to assist Government of Bihar, with certain aspects of flood management (e.g. Shelter Management, Disaster Victim Registry etc.). The OSSRC team was entrusted with the task of installation & customization (in part) of a popular FOSS disaster management software named Sahana ( http://www.Sahana.lk/ ). The team used it's FOSS experience to carry out all required tasks and the work was praised by IBM India.
